Home and Family

Home and family life in the UK is quite similar to the American lifestyles. In the UK we go to work, we go to the cinema, watch TV, cook, clean, love our pets, have parent teacher meetings, follow sports and so on. The differences are subtle. UK employee rights are good, we get more paid holidays (over 5 weeks). On TV we're watching British sitcoms, drama and soap operas, with a sprinkling of US import TV. Most of our cinema experiences are the top American films, with a few British films too. We cook different recipes and call the same things different things. Cleaning, well, it's just as tedious anywhere. The top sports are football (soccer), rugby and cricket, instead of NFL, basketball and baseball. You can still find the American sports, but not as much. It's normal not to have a car, but take the bus or train, cycle and walk. Most of the brands will be unknown to a newcomer, it makes shopping an adventure. If you have a small fridge, it's a daily adventure.

Tip of the Day

Dates in the UK (and most of the world) are formatted differently than the USA. Instead of Month-Day-Year, the day is first, Day-Month-Year and said for example "the 7th of November" (07-11-2011). Pay attention on important forms and food expirations!
