Car Boot sale

A public market where people sell (usually) unwanted household items, but you can also get homegrown plants and similar. They are usually held on a Sunday. You can get some genuine bargains, if you’re lucky and it’s a good neighbourhood! There are diehard car-booters who will go every Sunday, getting there first thing to race around trying to find antiques.

Cockney Rhyming Slang

A form of slang where the second word of the given phrase rhymes with the intended word, but only the first word of the phrase is used.

Apples and pears = stairs. (Old) Dog and bone = phone Trouble and strife = wife Septic tank = yank (American. A good indication of how well we’re received by some).

“I called up the trouble on the old dog but she’d already gone up the apples to bed”.
